Inspired by true life events of Harvey Ball

A short film about Harvey Ball, the artist who created one of the most recognizable icons on the planet, the Smiley Face. Conceived during the turbulent 60’s for a company's morale campaign, Smiley has a simple, straightforward positive message. A message that transcends language, geography, generations and time. A message that transcends cultures, class, politics and religions.

FILM APPROACH

To create a documentary film based on the genuine life of Harvey Ball by way of creative storytelling: unique Fine Art, Visual Effects and the Highest Caliber of Cinematography. The Art Direction is extremely important as Harvey Ball was a true artist.

SYNOPSIS

The Man Behind the Smile is an extraordinary story of a humble artist's creation of the iconic yellow smiley face that continues to shape our world. The product of a depression era upbringing and a combat veteran survivor of WWII, each had a profound effect on how Harvey chose to live a simple and joyful life with his family and in community. It also contributed to his inspiration to create a powerful positive message; something the world needs and craves in today’s complex, often divisive, content glutted world. The Smiley Face is the only icon that does not require billions in active and targeted promotional efforts to live - Harvey Ball literally gave it to the world. Engaged as a commercial artist by a local Insurance Company, Harvey created the Smiley as a symbol as part of a campaign to boost employee morale . He was paid a whopping $45 for the original Smiley design that took him 10 minutes to create what would later become a timeless and universal symbol of goodwill. Sixty years on, it is stronger today than when created and the legacy of Harvey Ball lives on through Smiley, World Smile Day, and the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation.

THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE ICON ON THE PLANET

Over the years, the icon has been reimagined by films like Forest Gump, bands like Nirvana and the Talking Heads, fashion forerunners: Marc Jacobs, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and visual artists from gallery to street to the likes of Banksy and Nate Lowman. Smiley has inspired endless artistic interpretations in all mediums, and in all languages and cultural representations.

As culture broadens across the globe the smiley continues to appear in new and clever forms.

PASSION | PURPOSE

Our purpose is to shine a light on true and vulnerable stories. We believe these stories have a special ability to connect humanity. In this case specifically, we see “goodwill” being the universal theme. A relatable story of an average person who created a simple, powerful message of goodwill. He released it to promote ‘ A simple act of kindness’ that can change the world. This message lives on through World Smile Day and the World Smile Foundation which he founded in 1999. “ Do an act of kindness - help one person smile.”
